[Takeover Target just misses in Japan debut/Andrew Eddy September 11, 2006 posted by theage.com.au]
AUSTRALIA'S best sprinter Takeover Target made an encouraging start to the Japan leg of his international tour when he finished second in the $1.4 million
group 2 Centaur Stakes at Chukyo yesterday. After a downpour before the race forced officials to downgrade the track,
Takeover Target showed all his customary pace to jump from barrier 11 and run to the front to secure the rails. He sped clear on the home turn
but was run down by the favourite, local sprinter She Is Tosho, who won by three lengths.
Takeover Target must win the group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama on October 1, where he clashes with Hong Kong star Silent Witness,
to keep alive his chance of collecting a $1.3 million bonus for the Global Sprint Challenge champion.
To win the bonus, Takeover Target must win group 1 races in three countries. With a win already in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington
in the autumn, he must also win the Sprinters Stakes in Japan and then the Hong Kong Sprint on December 10.
Trainer Joe Janiak said before the race he would have preferred a few more weeks in Japan with Takeover Target, who arrived only last week from England,
where he won a group 2 sprint and was group 1 placed. She Is Tosho last year smashed the 1200-metre track record at Chukyo with a slashing time of
one minute 6.7 seconds.
[No luck in draw for Takeover Target/September 30, 2006 posted by theage.com.au]
AUSTRALIAN star Takeover Target has drawn barrier 13 of 16 for tomorrow's group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama, Japan.
The Joe Janiak-trained gelding will start immediately to the inside of Hong Kong's superstar Silent Witness in the 1200 metres feature.
The horse who beat Takeover Target at his Japanese debut in last month's Centaur Stakes, She Is Tosho, has drawn favourably in barrier five, while
Golden Jubilee Stakes winner Les Arcs has gate three.Janiak's son Ben told a Sydney radio station yesterday they originally received a fax telling them
Takeover Target had drawn barrier seven before a superseding message arrived a few minutes later correcting it to barrier 13.
He said the wide draw would make the seven-year-old's task harder but reported Takeover Target was well and pleased regular jockey
Jay Ford in a gallop yesterday morning.Tomorrow's race is the penultimate leg of the Global Sprint Series, which Takeover Target leads
following his wins in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington and King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. He also earned points for his third to
Les Arcs in the Golden Jubilee. The final race in the series is the Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin in December.
